Study
To achieve its goals, HIAST adopts the following strategies which made it distinguished right from the beginning in comparison with the system of higher education found in Syria. Some of these strategies are:

 Selecting students who score high marks in baccalaureate- scientific branch(Belong to first 15% top students).

Accepting a limited number of students in each field of specialization.

A homogeneous highly qualified teaching staff.

Implementing teaching methods which promote thinking and reasoning.

Taking care of the integration between theory and practice in respect of the content and the number of teaching hours.

Modern and effective foreign language teaching.

Regular assessment and evaluation of students' progress.
-
Flexible and up-dated teaching programs.
At the stage of engineering license, studying at HIAST lasts for five years divided into two phases:
 Common core: lasts for two years. Teaching in this stage aims at providing the student with the necessary background in mathematics, physics, informatics, engineering sciences and foreign languages so he can continue his studies in his specialization.
Specialization: lasts for three years. The objective is to equip the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in his specialization so that he becomes able to employ both his theoretical knowledge and practical experience to overcome problems which he might face in his professional career.
Concerning specializations at HIAST, they change according to technological advances and other establishments' needs but these specializations remain within the basic framework in the engineering training strategy adopted by HIAST.
Some of the engineering specializations found at HIAST during the past years are:
Electronic Systems، Communications، Informatics، Management engineering, Physics engineering, Optical electronics and Electro mechanics.
