License in engineering

License in engineering

  • At the engineering training stage, HIAST offers entrance to Syrian students and other who enjoy the same lefts provided that they are awarded the baccalaureate (scientific branch). On the other hand, Arab students who produce a certificate equivalent to the Syrian baccalaureate (scientific branch) can also enroll at HIAST on the condition that they pay the annual study fees with the exception that public bodies pay the study costs for students who are offered scholarships. Students who successfully pass the final examinations will be awarded the certificate accordingly. This certificate will be signed by HIAST director and the minister of higher education.
  • At the stage of engineering license, studying at HIAST lasts for five years divided into two phases:
    • Common core: lasts for two years. Teaching in this stage aims at providing the student with the necessary background in mathematics, physics, informatics, engineering sciences and foreign languages so he can continue his studies in his specialization.
    • Specialization: lasts for three years. The objective is to equip the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in his specialization so that he becomes able to employ both his theoretical knowledge and practical experience to overcome problems which he might face in his professional career.

The academic year and the principles of the teaching plan

  • The academic year is divided into two terms at least. There is a holiday after the semester. This holiday is a week at least and it must not exceed three weeks.
  • The academic year at HIAST is not less than thirty actual study weeks.
  • The teaching plan in the common core and in each specialization is decided by HIAST council. In this plan, the scientific standards, the content of subjects which go in line with technical developments are taken into account before approving the teaching plan.
  • At the start of the academic year, HIAST council issues the academic calendar which specifies the beginning and the end of each term together with dates of holidays. Subjects teachers are notified to teach specific classes. A coordination committee for each unit of subjects is appointed. The duty of this committee is to control teaching within the unit and to supervise the teaching process in it. In addition to deciding to give students who fail a subject in the unit a pass or not after examining them.
  • The teacher of the subject is responsible for the theoretical, practical part of his subject and the project related to this subject (if existed) because they complete each other.
  • The subject teacher specifies dates, conditions and the duration of tests and examinations. The duration of the written exam should not be less than two hours. All these arrangements should be done in coordination with HIAST Co-director for Teaching Affairs and the Directorate of Students Affairs.
  • Every student is free to practice sport or cultural activities or others after finishing classes. The student who submits an authenticated report about his activities to a specialized committee headed by the Institute attorney for educational affairs is awarded by adding no more than half a mark to his annual average.

Success Rules and Evaluations:

  • Student succeeds in his academic year if his average in each unit isn?t less than 50%, unless he gets zero in any subject of the unit subjects.
  • The average of the unit the average of the subjects in it after giving them coefficients in proportionate with their teaching hours after doubling the teaching hours of the main subjects.
  • The average of the subject is the average of: marks of homework, oral tests and practical classes after giving them three coefficients at most, and  marks of written tests after giving them two coefficients at most, and mark of written exam after giving it three coefficients.
  • When a student gets a mark less than 40% in any subject, he is immediately called after exam results announcement to do a make-up exam in the same subject, then the mark he gets replaces the written exam or the average of the written tests or both of them, according to the student?s benefit, and he will be given a mark of 50% in the subject if the new average exceeds 50%.
  • When a student gets in the end of the year an average in a unit less than 50% and more than 40%, then the unit committee has the right to call him after exam results announcement to do a set of oral tests or written tests or both of them in the unit subjects. Once the committee decides to pass him, his final average of this unit is fixed 50 degrees only, and that will be mentioned in the results list.
  • The annual average is the averages of the units in that year after multiplying each unit by coefficients in proportion with the total number of its teaching hours.
  • The graduation project in the last year is considered a separate unit.
  • Student isn?t allowed to fail in the first year, otherwise he will be dismissed from the institute; and he isn?t allowed to fail in two successive years. And it?s conditioned that a student will not fail more than two years throughout his studying period, otherwise he will be dismissed from the institute for using up the success opportunities.
  • The graduation average is the averages of the five academic years after multiplying the averages of the academic years in the core course by one coefficient and the averages of the academic years in the specialization stage by one and a half coefficients.
  • Success evaluation of student at the end of every academic year is classified according to his general average in that year as the following:
Success Evaluation General Average
Honor Grade 90 and more
Distinction Grade From 80 to 90
Very good Grade 70 ~ 80
Good Grade 60 ~ 70
Acceptable Grade

50 ~ 60
